How to Host a First Friday Artist: A Resource for Missoula Businesses

Hosting an artist for First Friday is a meaningful way to support Missoula’s creative community while bringing new visitors into your space. Whether you’re a coffee shop, boutique, dispensary, or any business that doesn’t typically display art, here are some best practices to help create a successful experience for both you and the artist.

For many artists, showing work in a non-gallery setting doesn’t always lead to significant sales. A small honorarium acknowledges their time, talent, and labor in preparing and hanging a show. Even a modest amount demonstrates respect and support.  Discuss this with the artist and determine what is an appropriate amount.

Make it as easy as possible for visitors to buy the work on display.  Artist or business should make info cards to accompany work.

– Clearly indicate whether pieces are for sale and include pricing.
– Decide in advance whether your business will process sales or direct buyers to the artist.
– If you handle sales, discuss the commission structure openly—many businesses simply pass the full amount to the artist, while others take a small administrative percentage.
– Display the artist’s contact information so guests can follow up after First Friday.

Art sales don’t always happen during the event itself—sometimes a visitor returns days or weeks later. Clear communication sets expectations and helps artists maximize this opportunity.

To ensure clarity and protect both the artist and your business, consider drafting a brief agreement outlining:

– The dates the artwork will be on display
– How sales will be handled
– Who is responsible if artwork is damaged or stolen during business hours
– Expectations for installation and removal
– Any honorarium or promotional commitments

This small step helps prevent misunderstandings and builds trust between you and the artist.

Visibility is key.
– Share the artist and event details across your social media platforms.
– Submit your First Friday listing to the Arts Missoula newsletter for expanded reach.
– Consider becoming an Arts Missoula Member! Your events will be featured on our website, and you’ll have access to open calls, directory listings, and additional promotional opportunities.

Artists often spend hours installing a thoughtful, professional display. Make the process smooth by supplying:

– A ladder
– Hammer and nails
– Hanging wires and hooks
– Good lighting or spotlights to ensure the work shines
– Providing a snack, a coffee, or a small gift card on installation day is a gracious way to acknowledge their efforts—these hours are real labor.

A warm, inviting environment goes a long way in making the artist and guests feel valued. Consider simple additions like music, light refreshments, or a small sign introducing the artist and their work.  Invite them to be there to talk to your guests about the work but do not require it unless you are willing to offer an small honorarium for the time.  Consider this a marketing expense.

By hosting an artist for First Friday, you’re helping to strengthen Missoula’s creative ecosystem—supporting small businesses, elevating local artists, and bringing vibrancy to our Missoula community.
