Global Awareness of an Interconnected Humanity

Collaboration with Missoula Artist Courtney Blazon

In 2018, Missoula artist and illustrator Courtney Blazon, in collaboration with Global and Cultural Affairs in Arts Missoula and KunstMatrix in Berlin, created a virtual gallery titled: Year Without a Summer, Art Erupts: From Missoula to the World.

A Year Without a Summer” takes inspiration from the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora on the island of Sumbawa in present-day Indonesia – one of the most powerful eruptions in recorded history. This far-reaching catastrophic event changed the world and gave birth to a global awareness of an interconnected humanity.

The virtual gallery was also shown as part of the 2018 First Night Missoula celebration, at the University of Montana University Center and at the 2019 International Festival at UM.

Why did Global & Cultural Affairs get involved in creating a virtual art gallery?

At Arts Missoula, we believe that art and culture are vital to the strength and growth of our community and we believe in connecting and engaging community through creative and educational experiences. I had this vision of creating a virtual, interactive community experience that would challenge the boundaries of an art collection and give freedom to the visitor, a far cry from a website featuring images of artists’ work. It was new territory for Courtney and a great learning experience for me. KunstMatrix was incredible to work with!” says Udo Fluck, Project Director.
