MISSOULA, Mont. — A 16-foot storage container is being transformed into a traveling arts destination in Missoula.
Arts Missoula announced the launch of The Art Box, a portable gallery built inside a renovated storage container. The organization said the container has been converted into a gallery space with lighting and flooring, and it will feature rotating exhibitions of local artwork.
The experience extends beyond the container itself. Arts Missoula said visitors will be able to take part in hands-on art activities for all ages outside the box, and the container’s exterior will also serve as a canvas with original artwork created by local artists.
Arts Missoula said the project was made possible through a new partnership with Big Sky Box Portable Storage.
Big Sky Box Portable Storage is owned and operated in Missoula by Mike Eckelkamp and Justin Townsend. The company’s mobile storage containers are marketed as a convenient and cost-effective option for homeowners and commercial customers in Missoula who want to move or store items.
The Art Box will make its public debut at a Missoula PaddleHeads game on Tuesday, July 28th at 5:30pm. Buy tickets here! The Art Box gallery will be open for baseball fans to walk through and enjoy before and during the game.
Designed to travel wherever creativity is needed, The Art Box will pop up throughout the year, bringing art directly into community spaces. The inaugural activation takes place on July 28th at a Missoula PaddleHeads game, where Arts Missoula is honored to serve as the Community Partner for the evening. The Art Box will feature work from students at Missoula Community School hanging on the inside and has been beautified with a permanent mural on the outside by local artist, Meghan Doremus. The Box is made of 100% steel, is completely weatherproof, and moves easily to almost any location. The possibilities and longevity of this project are inspiring, and we’re thrilled to have a new way to engage artists and community members.
Future appearances are planned for First Fridays, Germanfest, Missoula On Main, and other community events, creating new opportunities for people to discover local artists, make art together, and experience creativity in unexpected places.
