By Trisha Drobeck, Run Wild Missoula Executive Director
At first glance, art and running appear to live in different worlds—one rooted in expression, the other in movement. But look closer, and they often share the same pulse. A run isn’t just miles; it’s a process of shaping experience—choosing terrain, pacing, rhythm, breath or surrendering to spontaneity and exploration. Just as an artist fills a canvas, a runner sketches a line across the landscape.
Missoula has a unique way of blurring these worlds. We don’t just run races—we run races that raise funds for conservation. We don’t just paint murals—we paint them under bridges, on forgotten walls, and on buildings once marked by blight. We commission sculptures and display them along river paths and in public parks. Here, the arts aren’t just present—they’re celebrated.
This is a place where you might finish a run on the River Trail, grab a coffee or a beer downtown, then meet up later for a concert at the Wilma or a First Friday art show—all without leaving a one-mile radius.
In Missoula, movement becomes a form of artistry, and art becomes a celebration of the places we move through. Whether with brushstrokes or footfalls, we create meaning on the landscapes that inspire us.
